There are only two companies making good self-winding watch mechanisms: Rolex, which makes the best by a couple of seconds and is only used in Rolex watches and Swatch which makes the ETA movement which is used in everything else: BREITLING, TAG, OMEGA, you name it, if it has a good self-winder and it's not Rolex, it's a Swatch ETA movement.

Most dealers either lie to you or don't know this because I have had over a dozen of them either not know this or lie to me.

When I say "best by a couple of seconds," the Rolex movement is good for about 10 seconds +/- off the line with an error range set to -2 seconds to +8 because you are going to be a lot angrier if the watch makes you late rather than early.

Once it's off the line, it might be -2, -1, +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +6, +7 or +8 or.... right on the money.

My first and only Rolex was off by about 5 seconds every six months so it was a lucky one that was almost right on (which, oddly, is typical of my life: some people say things never go right and I'm the yin to their yang; in my life, I nearly always have good luck when chance is involved).

The best ETA movement gives you a 13 second range, set to -3 to +10 off the line.

If you own a Rolex and want it set to dead nuts accurate, take it to the guru at http://bestofbaker.blogspot.com/2011/12/best-clock-and-watch-shop-on-earth.html who can set it right at 0.

If you have the better of the ETA movements, such as in the Omega line, the Oly Watch guru can set it within 2 seconds of zero with his tools but from my limited understanding, it is essentially luck if you hit -1, 0 or +1 so he may well get it right on.

I'm told the Breitling is still even a second of two outside of this range BUT I still pick the Breitling NAVTIMER 01 basic or 1461 (not the world, it lacks the tachometer) as the best all around watch as it is self-winding, large and easy to read and has not only a tachometer but also a circular slide rule making it the most useful watch made even if it might be a a few seconds off a Rolex.

With the self-winding mechanism you never need to change batteries. I wore my Rolex nearly every day of 18+ years before leaving it in a motel in Laramie, WY and, surprise, surprise the staff didn't find it in the morning.

BUSH'S HONEY BAKED BEANS: best canned baked beans on earth

My father, Charles Orville "Chas" Baker, made the best baked beans I have ever had by soaking beans until ready, then making it with Harrington bacon and Vermont maple syrup from Vermont Syrupworks, his own maple sugar orchard (which my deranged mother is trying to give away to the last people on earth my father would want to own it, flat-landers from Virginia, Tig and Elise Tillinghast, who only want it as a tax write off for their real business, www.defenseindustrydaily.com/ - a competitor to Jane's!).

Except for growing the beans and slaughtering the pig himself, it could not have been more home-made.

And they tasted like it.

Selling Dad's recipe in a can would not be cost effective as it would cost $20/can so the second best after Dad's that I have ever found are the HONEY variety of BUSH'S BEST BAKED BEANS.

Their claim is just not hot air, these are the best. My Designated Dining Companion, Kelli Lynn Baker, agrees. We have tried the VEGETARIAN (not enough flavor for the fat you save) and ORIGINAL (also not enough flavor) and MAPLE CURED (too much fatty pork in) and BOSTON RECIPE (too much like MAPLE CURED) and HONEY wins.

HONEY has the best all around flavor and not too much meat. In fact, I ate five cans of it before freaking out when I ate a spoon full with meat in it not because I'm against eating animals but because I didn't realize it even had any in there. Kelli thought I was nuts as she had aparently been aware all along asking me how I thought it tasked so good when the vegatarian one was so bland.

Well, yeah, DUH! I see it on the label now but, well, what can I say.

I just hadn't had any after eating several cans and it was so plentiful and fatty and gross in some of the other ones that I thought the HONEY was meatless.

Weirdly, I have now had several pieces of meat and none of it has been the super-fatty nastiness I got in cans of other flavors.

It's as if they trim it for the HONEY cans... (having written that, perhaps I've jinxed it and will be getting regular mouthfuls of blubber from now on!).

ATTENTION FELLOW DOOMSDAY PREPPERS:

If you like canned baked beans, look no further than Bush's to add to your supply.

BEST EXERCISE EQUIPMENT (home OR gym): CONCEPT 2 model E

ONLY GET THE E: you get SO, SO much more for just a few more bucks

Concept 2 rowing machines are the best all around workout a person can have with a piece of exercise equipment.

It is a low-impact, full body workout that does a better, safer job of keeping you fit than any other machine made.

You can even hook them together and race each other right out of the box.

I bought an early model in 1989 when I lived in Winooski, Vermont (so I simply drove over to the factory and picked one up all put together took it home).

I just bought another one last week and it was delivered yesterday.

It took a week to get here and came in two small, fairly light boxes. And even though it came with the wrong instructions, it only took clever me just under 30 minutes to assemble and only required a rubber mallet to "seat" one of the two legs besides the included allen wrench.

The mallet was needed as there is a black plastic piece on the back that is poorly designed and I was unable to slide the rear legs in hand so I had to pound the CRAP out of it to get it to line up so the screws could fit. I must have hit it as hard as I could two dozen times before it finally got close enough to force a screw in.

This is the one thing on the unit that needs a redesign for the Concept 3, model A.

If I had done it before and had a mallet handy, it would be a ten minute process: 4 main pieces, ten screws, snap the two main pieces together, put battery in the computer snap it on the arm, drop the arm on the machine and row.

The computer even comes with a rechargeable battery that charges from your rowing making it environmentally friendly as well (and up to four of these connect to compete - WIRELESSLY!).

Oh, and comes with a Garmin heart belt that linked up in 2 minutes rather than the 5 it said it would take.

It's so much more advanced than the Concept 2 of 1989 that my only question is why they didn't call it the Concept 3 (well, that and why they would want to sell more than one model; you never want to compete against yourself).

My suggestion: drop the D and D+ models (or however you want to look at the upgraded D; it even sounds like a bad grade) and sell only the Model E.

But call it the Concept 3, model A after changing the color and fixing that awful plastic piece.

With the enormous savings on tech support, printing manuals, making and stocking second class parts, as well as a less confusing website, you can then drop the price and sell the crap out of them.

I suggest $1,111.11 with a deal on buying 2, 3 or 4 and then blanket the gyms with mailers - far too few have these machines currently; at least my area of Salt Lake they are nearly impossible to find - which is why I just bought my own.

However, since I spend $1,000 to $5,000 a year and have for 15 years, they still let me shop there.

And make sure you know what you're doing when you go in so you don't get pegged as a poseur:

Nikon for dSLRs - just like the pros use (but they make terrible pocket digis; go to Canon for those).

I know personally, or are acquainted with, 11 professional photographers and all 11 of them use Nikon including Weston Hall, Lee Cohen, Keith Carlsen and Brett Colvin.

Canon dSLRs are for consumers who don't know any better and are to be avoided. For instance, the glue used in the lenses, even the top of the line ones, fails at temperature extremes whereas Nikon equipment ready for anything and is even water proof if you connect the D4 to a G series lens albeit they won't guarantee that and it isn't for diving, just for keeping dust and rain out.

Canon does makes the best pocket cameras (S100 is current top of the line) but makes consumer-grade dSLRs thereby proving the old adage that you can't do everything well.

I have used them all and Valvoline is the best, with CASTROL EDGE ia good second choice if Valvoline isn't available. I would say CASTROL was about 99% as good but harder to find.

Valvoline runs the smoothest, makes the vehicle start much, much better in the cold thereby saving your batter (and engine).

The best place to buy it is at AUTOZONE when they have their regular sales (every six weeks or so Valvoline SYNpower is on sale there).

If you must, use Mobile 1 but it is a poor 3rd choice (you can get it in bulk fairly cheaply at WAL-MART, a sure sign it's crappy).

Just get it changed out for Valvoline as soon as possible.

Using using anything else and you are penny wise and pound foolish. And change it every 5,000.

TRUE, but incredible story of Valvoline SYNpower saving me $6,000 or so on a new engine: I once drove a car for a short distance without an oil pan after crashing in to a building and backing up and racing off home before the police got there. The engine was fine. The mechanics at said "there is no way you could have done that without synthetic oil, your engine should have seized up solid." And, what, $30,000 to retool? I don't know, you know. I mean, if you'd do it. I'd offer this:
Pay for all retooling and your time. Pay for all the changes. Only wear or give away to close friends who were my exact size (all pants the same 29 waist, 30-ish leg to fit me). Pay you whatever profit you want to make this happen. Release any and all design changes to you to incorporate now or later or never but just in case my pants were a hit, it's all yours (you can even call them the BAKER if you want :)

So - is this even something you'd be willing to do, I guess is step one.

How I came to be a loyal customer of PA:

A few months ago, I decided it was time to get a system in my house. After much contemplation and introspection, I decided to go the Mackie route. A 1202, some Mackie 450s and a couple subs and play a little music at my house.

Not knowing any better, I went to Guitar Center.

What a bunch of fuckers they are. Commission based sales is the worst.

I manage to get a mixer and some headphones and some odds and ends feeling out their weird coupon/discount system that seems terribly confusing and crooked.

But finally I get a 15% off offer and not just "$100 off a purchase of $599 or more" type crap that is hard to use wisely.

I usually deal with Alex, a fairly reasonable guy. But he's not there and I get a weird, twitchy guy who won't deal with me on two speakers, he will only give me 15% off on one. And he has to go get a manager out of the back room to do it (how about the managers GET THEIR ASSES OUT ON THE SALES FLOOR!)

So I say, I'll buy one today, one tomorrow, as "I don't stand for this sort of crap."

During a 25 minute waste of my time, he asks a manager twice to override the one speaker price (he "erased the order" once he said) all the while spending more time telling others he'd be right with them than waiting on me.

FINALLY we get to the credit card phase and he won't take Kelli's card without her there even though I have her and my matching Passport cards. Note that I have used it there a half dozen times before for little things without an issue... it's just this weird, twitchy asshole who gets all, "You see the problem is" on me.

Just as well... I hated having some jerk check my shit on the way out like Costco. Guitar Center treats you like a crook on the way in if you are carrying anything and on the way out if you buy anything.

Naturally, I snatch the card back from Twitchy Man and go home and get on the Mackie site and find that PERFORMANCE AUDIO also sells Mackie.

I call "IVAN" there and say, "I'm pissed off at Guitar Center and want two Mackie's at $510 each, will you do it?" He says, "SURE - we've got 6 of them, come on down."

He took Kelli's card without even asking for ID.

Anyone going to GUITAR CENTER is a complete moron looking to get the worst shopping experience I can remember ever having not counting buying cars.

THEN YESTERDAY I am in there looking to buy a couple subs and a bunch of wires and stuff and this bald dude shouts, "Who has the BAKER FOR PRESIDENT truck outside?"

I say I do.

He says, "I have some questions. I probably won't like the answers. But I need to finish this guy first."

Oh, really? If it said "HUNTSMAN FOR PRESIDENT" do you suppose he would have said the same thing to Jon?

He seems pretty cocky, this man who wants me to wait for him.

He's taller than I am and I know that taller men always feel superior to shorter men. And he's got some hipster glasses on and rather than comb over or try to hide his baldness which a sign of a very weak man. This dude embraced it Kojack-style. So I decide he is one of the few true alpha men in this world and since I am the silverback of alphas, I'll wait....

...and then gave him the full BAKER including shouting, demonstrating a great way to break arms and legs from my martial arts training (and knocking a can full of pens all over the place in the process) and telling stories about myself that are all 100% true but sound so crazy nearly no one ever believes me at first.

After I ended up deciding I'm never shopping anywhere else.

I love PERFORMANCE AUDIO. I cannot recommend them highly enough. ALWAYS try them first.

The $800 surely would have involved the tribal cop waiting at the top to ticket me for not having a permit to drive on the sand and the excessive towing fee for trying to cheat the Red Man yet again. David Baker did not and does not do that and Carmen (I think) Tobey went over and dismissed the cop and Kelli and I, alas, had to decline the tour invite as we were out of time and money for that trip.

We never met Smith.

Their cut was taken out of my winnings from Kinney's, an unusual arrangement brokered by Brady as he gave Mark the HONESTY GUARANTEE that I would never lie to him and I was the wronged party. Ken was hired on my behalf by John Bresee to get me out of a bad DUI stop. The cops pull over every car on the road that is out of state between 1 AM and 2 AM as they know you're likely drunk. I had been at a house party of backcountry.com employees with John when we stupidly left at The Witching Hour. I was driving PERFECTLY (the video proves it) but was pulled over and the cop lied about what I had done (all my supposed errors were out of site of any camera). A VanCott attorney botched the case terribly, so John sent Ken over and he fixed it in about 90 seconds in the hallway of the Matheson Courthouse. Stunning brass balls on that guy. He said, "It's a bad stop, you know it, my guy's friend is paying and has all the money in the world and I have all the time. Do you really want to go in that room?" nodding to the doors to the court while I sat on a bench after doing all the heavy lifting (flamboyantly firing my attorney in court, then going it alone and demanding to show the video in court, then when I was ready to do that, John insisted I bring Ken and he didn't go for the charm as I had been doing, he went for the threats and it worked much better than my way; $1,500 for one quick phone call and 5 minutes at the court). So none of these attorneys has ever been paid directly by DCB but all have done stunning work for him. As for Stewart and Brady, I can personally vouch for the 100% integrity and honesty. If you are innocent, go to one of them first. If you are guilty and live in SLC, go to Ken first. If you are guilty and do not live in SLC, call Brady and tell him you are guilty and a friend of Baker's and want the name of the shadiest, most cut throat fixer he knows to try and get scum like you off. Dog Team Sticky Buns

¾ POUND POTATOES, PEELED AND CUBED
¼ POUND (1 STICK) MARGARINE, AT ROOM TEMPERATURE
2 ¾ CUPS SUGAR
1 ½ TEASPOONS SALT
1 PACKAGE ACTIVE DRY YEAST
2 EGGS, WELL BEATEN
7 CUPS ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR
1 ½ CUPS PACKED LIGHT BROWN SUGAR
1 ½ CUPS CHOPPED WALNUTS
½ POUND (2 STICKS) LIGHTLY SALTED BUTTER, MELTED
¼ CUP GROUND CINNAMON

Boil potatoes in salted water to cover until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain the potatoes, reserving 1 ½ cups of the cooking liquid, and mash. Measure 1 Cup of the mashed potatoes and reserve the rest for another use.

Stir together the mashed potatoes, margarine, ½ cup of the sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm and add yeast, eggs and the reserved 1 ½ cups cooking liquid. Mix well. Add flour and stir. Knead on a lightly floured surface until the dough is smooth and elastic. Set in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk. Punch down and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.

Butter three 9-inch round or square baking dishes. Distribute brown sugar evenly among the pans. Sprinkle with enough water to make the sugar very wet. Distribute walnuts evenly over the brown sugar.

Roll out the dough into a ½-inch-thick rectangle on a well-floured surface. Brush with melted butter. Stir together the remaining 2 ¼ cups sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the buttered dough. Roll up the dough as you would a jelly roll. Cut into ½-inch-thick slices. Arrange the slices cut-side up in the prepared pans so that they are almost touching. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Bake the sticky buns until golden brown, 20 to 30 minutes.
Immediately invert the buns onto a plate.
